A brief summary of Le Malabar largue les amarres :

The story unfolds in Calcutta around 1900. Bonaventure, a young assistant-inspector has been entrusted with a sensitive mission to say the least. He will infiltrate the Izzat Khan gang of unscrupulous thugs. Operating from the French colony of Chandernagor, they take advantage of the rivalry between the French and the English and the help of a shady politician Mr. Pasdeboeuf to commit their misdemeanours. Even the Bishop who cavorts with lovely Camelia cannot be counted on to bring a semblance of morality to the colony. Bonaventure’s mission will take the reader to overheated India and its mixture of violent passion, spices and mud, impossible love, corruption and luxury, hate and treachery.
